Rocky Mountain Gateway
Sherman Pass / Photo by Tom Craig

The Gateway to the Rockies is the "other" Washington. Get away from your troubles and return to the pristine world of the Ponderosa forests, crisp clean air and undiluted scenery.
In the Colville National Forest, caribou, moose, wolf, lemming and grizzly bear make their homes in this unspoiled expanse of pine forest and alpine terrain. Bald eagles come here to feed on fish in lush rivers and streams. Glaciers scoured these waterways that feed the mighty Columbia River system. Within the millions of acres of the forest, three waves of mountains run from north to south. These are considered foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Downhill and cross-country skiing plus more than 300 miles of signed snowmobile trails offer endless recreation in winter. Summer allows easy access to hiking and riding trails that sprawl for hundreds of miles. Sherman Pass National Forest Scenic Byway on Highway 20 also opens in warmer months and is one of the most beautiful drives in the state.
The 130-mile long Roosevelt Lake was created as a result of the immense Columbia River Basin project and the damming of the Columbia River. Named for President Roosevelt, the lake is now one of the largest recreation areas in Washington. Rent a charming houseboat and escape the routine of life on land. With literally hundreds of miles of shoreline, opportunities abound for boating, fishing, swimming, camping and hiking.
