A searing, multi-media poetic riff on race in America, fusing prose, poetry, movement, music, video, news and the visual image. Snapshots, vignettes, on the acts of everyday racism. Some of these encounters are slights, seeming slips of the tongue, and some are intentional offensives in the classroom, at the supermarket, at home, on the tennis court with Serena Williams, online, on TV -- everywhere, all the time. Those did-that-really-just-happen-did-they-really-just-say-that slurs that happen every day and enrage in the moment and later steep poisonously in the mind. And, of course, those larger incidents that become national or international firestorms. [less-]

Come create a show! Leave the stresses of the world outside, join your friends (and a few strangers) to really LAUGH. "Seattle Theatresports", the longest running show in the city, is celebrating 36 years. It is fun, fast-paced and hilarious. There is a buzz of excitement in the air when you enter at the Gum Wall. People are lined up at the concession (where you smell the fresh buttered popcorn) and over at the bar they are serving icy, inexpensive drinks. When you enter the theater, you feel the beat of the music. BAM! Each dynamic night is created on the fly and is so funny it's hard to believe the improvisers made everything up on the spot. Two teams of improvisers rumble, competing with exciting fast-paced segments improv games, stories, scenes, and a few songs. Boo the judges loudly as they award points to each team. At the end of the night, one team is declared a winner! The audience member with the best suggestion walks out with a prize, and you walk out with new memories. [less-]

Joan Didion, a perennial front-runner for the "Best Living American Writer" title, found a powerful and poignant way to talk about grief in her acclaimed memoir, "The Year of Magical Thinking". Now the award-winning book is an equally acclaimed play, which "The New York Times" called “an indelible portrait of loss and grief … a haunting portrait of a four-decade-long marriage.” This 90-minute one-woman performance recounts the fallout from the sudden death of the author's husband, novelist John Gregory Dunne, shortly before the couple's 40th wedding anniversary. That devastating period also saw the death of the couple's daughter, Quintana, from a battery of acute and chronic illnesses. See Didion’s story of crippling grief and her ultimate, inspiring journey to acceptance when "The Year of Magical Thinking" comes to Falls Theatre at ACT in Seattle. [less-]
