"Queens Girl in the World", the hit play of the 2015 Women’s Voices Theater Festival in Washington, D.C., is a charming, semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story about a young black girl in the 60s. This one-woman show includes not just our heroine, the engaging Jacqueline Marie Butler, but 12 more characters including her Caribbean father, imperious mother, girlfriends and boyfriends, as she moves from the safety of her sheltered Queens neighborhood to a new school in Greenwich Village. Take three delicious, malicious wives, add three miserable, unloving husbands -- and chill. That's the recipe of Michele Lowe's tantalizing new comedy that had Broadway audiences cheering. "The Smell of the Kill" revolves around Nicky, Debra and Molly who have tolerated one another during once-a-month dinners for years. While their unseen spouses play golf in the dining room, the women exchange confidences for the first time revealing that all three marriages are on the brink of disaster and all three women are facing the challenges of their lives. Nicky's husband has been indicted for embezzlement, Molly's husband is stalking her and Debra's husband is leaving her for another woman. When the men mistakenly lock themselves in a basement meat locker the women are faced with a life-or-death decision -- should they leave the men out in the cold -- permanently -- or let them thaw? One by one the women make their choices with more than a little help from one another. [less-]

Norway's legendary progressive-rock band celebrates its 50th anniversary with an international tour and a stop at the Alberta Rose. Few Norwegian bands have achieved such international recognition as Aunt Mary. They were stars on the Scandinavian heavy and prog rock scene back in the '70s and compared with giants like Deep Purple, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Ten Years After and King Crimson. Guitar player and main songwriter Bjørn Kristiansen was one of the founders of Aunt Mary back in the late '60s. He is regarded one of Scandinavia’s finest rock guitarists and has written many of the bands greatest songs. [less-]

"Re-Birthing The Cool" features the music of Gerry Mulligan, Miles Davis & Gil Evans and Dave Pell. Some of what we are playing is the West Coast movement, which was around the late 1940s and early 1950s. This music of Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Shorty Rodgers, Shelly Mann and others helped in cooling down for a minute the hot jazz played all over the country in the early 1940s and late '30s. This was a great time to live in, the music was changing and players were getting their pens out and putting great ideas down on paper, then forming groups to perform their works. Also in our repertoire for the evening is the music of Thelonious Monk, Charlie Mingus, Curtis Fuller and other bebop players, plus some present ideas of David Watson, Mary-Sue Tobin, Pete Petersen, Stan Bock, Ed Bennett, Alyssa Schwary-McDonald. The Light Opera of Portland presents Gilbert & Sullivan's "Princess Ida or, Castle Adamant." "Princess Ida; or, Castle Adamant" is a comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It was their eighth operatic collaboration of 14. "Princess Ida" opened at the Savoy Theatre on 5 January 1884, for a run of 246 performances. New Century Players Community Theatre presents "Suite Surrender" by Michael McKeever. It's 1942, and two of Hollywood's biggest divas have descended upon the luxurious Palm Beach Royale Hotel — assistants, luggage, and legendary feud with one another in tow. Everything seems to be in order for their wartime performance ... that is, until they are somehow assigned to the same suite. Mistaken identities, overblown egos, double entendres, and a lap dog named Mr. Boodles round out this hilarious riot of a love note to the classic farces of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Directed by Kraig Williams. [less-]

Happiness is great musical theatre! "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Revised)" is a fresh approach to the all-time 1967 classic, based on the beloved comic strip by Charles Schultz. Sally Brown joins Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder and Snoopy in this charming revue of vignettes and songs. The time of the action is “an average day in the life of Charlie Brown.” It really is just that, a day made up of little moments picked from all the days of Charlie Brown, from Valentine’s Day to the baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, all mixed in with the lives of his friends (both human and non-human) and strung together on the string of a single day, from bright uncertain morning to hopeful starlit evening. We encourage families to attend this great show! [less-]
