"I was born here. I'm from here. I'm American." Witness the story of 12-year-old Ben Uchida, a Japanese-American boy whose life is changed forever following the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor. When the U.S. government forces Japanese-American citizens into internment camps, Ben and his family must face difficult truths about the idea of home. One young person's struggle to understand a society allowing mass discrimination against its citizens poses questions as urgent today as they were in the past. "The Journal of Ben Uchida: Citizen 13559" takes a thoughtful look at moments that shaped the American experience, taking care to address even the most sensitive issues. The play serves as a reminder to audience members of all ages never to accept such injustice. Relive this chapter in history at Seattle Children's Theatre - Eve Alvord Theatre. [less-]

Before it became the feature film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, "The Last Five Years" began as a stirring stage musical that was hailed as one of the 10 best shows of 2001 by "Time" Magazine. Told through inventive and heartrending songs, "The Last Five Years" is a two-person show that navigates the ins and outs -- and beginning and ending -- of a marriage. Written by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown ("Parade"), this Drama Desk Award winner is the story of a couple's five-year relationship, from the thrilling pangs of new love to their painful final separation. There is, however, a twist: The man retells the relationship from beginning to end, while the woman relates their story in reverse. The two characters' emotional timelines converge in the middle of the show -- at their wedding. See this heartfelt song cycle at Seattle's 12th Ave Arts. [less-]

In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. Her writing offers insights on timely issues such as gender, race, gay rights and the media, as well as her own pet peeves -- among them celebrity culture, tourists and strollers. "The New York Times Book Review" calls Lebowitz an "important humorist in the classic tradition." Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist who's often been called a modern-day Dorothy Parker. Now, Fran brings her acerbic views on current events (including Trump, tax bills and more) to Seattle's Benaroya Hall stage for an exclusive one-night-only engagement. She'll be interviewed by Paul Constant, co-founder of "The Seattle Review of Books". [less-]

Reeling from the loss of their volatile mother, Kali and Simone are at odds as to whether to sell their costly childhood home. They compromise by renting out the attic, and into their lives walks Jo, an accomplished young war reporter. But her reasons for moving in are more complex than the sisters know: Haunted by the death of her beloved mentor, Jo is hell bent on untangling the mysteries contained in his journals ... whose pages point straight to Kali and Simone. As entanglements deepen and past collides with present, Kali, Simone and Jo relay three sides of the same story through the show's music, set and book. Featuring a rhythmic and soulful score that fuses pop, rock and modern indie-folk, "Afterwords" is the story of three women bound by notes scribbled down on paper, and the art we make from the love that makes us. See this rock-musical at Issaquah's Village Theatre. [less-]

The time is the mid '70s, the place a city in upstate New York. John, a playwright, returns to his family's house, bringing with him a new play which he has written about them. His purpose is to obtain their permission to proceed with production, but his wealthy, very proper parents are cautious from the outset. For them the theatre is personified by the gracious, comforting era of the Lunts and Ina Claire, and they are disturbed by the bluntness of modern plays. And there's also John's sister Nina to contend with, although her reservations have to do with the fact that John has given her character such a minor role. Their confrontation takes place during the ritual of the cocktail hour, and as the martinis flow, so do the recriminations and revelations, both funny and poignant. Experience "The Cocktail Hour" at Renton Civic Theatre. [less-]

"An inspired blend of high-energy blues, R&B and roadhouse rock...soulful, celebratory vocals and exquisite, stellar guitar" --Blues Revue "Swaggering, razor-wire gospel-tinged soul, simmering deep blues and hard-grooving house rockers" -AllMusic.com "Gritty, funky, rocking and original" -Boston Globe Blazing soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro's musical roots run deep. As he unleashes his high-energy music to fans all over the world, Castro is inspired by the sounds he absorbed while coming of age on the rough and tumble side of San Jose, California. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, this was Castro's home turf--his stomping ground. It was a place where the street-tough Mexican Americans and the counter-culture hippies came together to drink, smoke, laugh, party and listen to tunes--the hippies with their blues and rock, the Mexicans with their soul music. Mixing the blues-rock he loved and the soul music he heard blasting out from the lowriders cruising the streets, along with the socially conscious message songs of the day, Tommy's own sound was born. He honed his guitar playing to a razor's edge on the city's competitive bar scene, where he learned how to capture an audience with his intensely passionate vocals, stellar musicianship and dynamic performances. Almost every major rock and soul act, from Ike & Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to Elvin Bishop to Taj Mahal, toured through the area, and Castro was at almost every show. He saw John Lee Hooker, Albert King and Buddy Guy & Junior Wells at the same local blues bar, JJ's, where he often jammed, dreaming of one day busting out. Over the course of his career, Tommy Castro's San Jose DNA has always inspired his music, whether he's squeezing out the deepest blues or the funkiest soul grooves. He and The Painkillers--bassist Randy McDonald, keyboardist Michael Emerson and drummer Bowen Brown--have played hundreds of shows to thousands of music lovers, always leaving his audiences screaming for more. All of his albums are filled with original blues, soul and West Coast rock, each song showing a slightly different side of Castro's multifaceted musical personality. Billboard says the band plays "irresistible contemporary blues-rock" with "street-level grit and soul." [less-]
