Author Tom Hansen deftly balances a raw story about the path that leads to self-destruction with wry humor and hope. A tight, 90-minute ride through Seattle’s music scene during the grunge era, "American Junkie" looks at the man behind the addiction and takes a hard look at the power heroin and other opioids have on people’s lives. A story of recovery and accountability, this adaptation of "American Junkie" follows Hansen as he goes from rock bottom and then rises to the path of recovery. Hansen was a pioneer in the punk rock scene in Seattle until he became hooked on heroin and started selling it. On his deathbed and weighing 100 pounds, he finally got clean in 1999 after six months in the hospital and in Bailey-Boushay House, a local hospice. He returned to school in 2000 and graduated with an MFA from the University of British Columbia in 2008. Hansen is the author of two books, the memoir "American Junkie" and the novel "This Is What We Do". See Book-It Repertory Theatre’s production of "American Junkie" at Seattle’s Center Theatre. Writer/performer Devin Bannon and director Keira McDonald bring to life historical TV interviews of the actual Klaus Sperber, while re-imagining the musical acts of his rock alter ego Nomi in nine soaring numbers in "Alien/Angel". In between the songs, Bannon-as-Klaus tells a moving narrative of his life as a young, queer German gifted with a soprano vocal range, who moved to Manhattan in the 1980’s with a generation of youth inspired by Warhol’s Factory. Klaus Nomi did the impossible: struck NYC speechless with his latex costumes, clown makeup and angelic voice. Now, on his comeback tour from outer space, Klaus tells the tale of his brush with fame and all-too-young death as one of the first celebrity victims of the AIDS epidemic. Accompanied by Annastasia Workman on the keys and Kathy Moore on guitar, "Alien/Angel" also features twin back-up dancers joining Klaus onstage with choreography by Waxie Moon. [less-]
