Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire, "Kimberly Akimbo" is equal parts rollicking fun, raucous humor and touching moments. Kimberly's a teenager that suffers from a rare condition that causes her body to age faster than it should. When she and her family flee Secaucus under dubious circumstances, Kimberly is forced to reevaluate her life while contending with a hypochondriac mother, a rarely-sober father, a scheming aunt, her own mortality and, most frighteningly, the possibility of first love. "At every single moment, the whole creation is beginning again, stretching the tent of the present moment to bursting. And the waves that push up through the oceans, and the waves that push up through the stars; and the waves that push upwards through history are the same waves that push up through us." These are the words of The Narrator in Craig Wright's 2007 play "The Pavilion", playing at Strawberry Theatre Workshop October 10-November 9. The story uses a 20-year high school reunion to demonstrate the hazards of regret and nostalgia, and ultimately paints life as an ongoing cycle of rebirth. Allison Standley ("My Fair Lady" at The Village, "Proof" at Strawshop) plays Kari, a small-town woman who's building a life for herself in the town she grew up in. Quinlan Corbett ("People of the Book" at ACT) is her high school sweetheart. Peter, who abandoned both Kari and Pine City, Minnesota as a youth, sees the reunion as a chance to redeem himself. "The Pavilion" strives to be so focused on Kari and Peter that none of the other hundreds of reunion guests are cast. Rob Burgess ("The Government Inspector" at Seattle Shakes, "Our Town" at Strawshop) is the afore-mentioned Narrator, and while he provides some exposition, he also morphs into nearly 20 different scene partners for the conflicted couple to play against. "Sunset Baby" begins with the story of Nina, a strong and independent woman named after the rebellious songstress, as she is visited by her estranged father and former revolutionary in the Black liberation movement, Kenyatta. She can’t tell what he’s after, a fix to their broken relationship or the only physical items of value she ties to her mother -- a collection of love letters written by her infamous parents. As the lives of father and daughter begin to intertwine, old wounds are revealed, generational differences exposed, and smoldering truths laid bare. Dominique Morisseau’s "Sunset Baby" is an energetic and vibrant narrative of the duality and intersectionality of family, legacy, and liberation. [less-]

The Yoginis Indian Jazz Project delivers exciting, fresh sounds fusing Indian classical, American jazz, and other world music influences. Pianist/composer Yogi McCaw began The Yoginis Indian Jazz Project to explore the new universe of this kind of music. Since then several versions of the ensemble, featuring different maestros at different times, have recorded and performed both in India and in the US -- in India in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture India and the prestigious Kuchipudi Dance Institute, and at the Northwest's largest Indian cultural festivals, Flavors of India and Anandmela. The current Project is comprised of Yogi on piano, sarode maestro Richard Russell, multi-instrumentalist Bob Antolin on flutes and reeds, and master percussionist of both Indian and Latin styles, Tor Dietrichson. The new quartet draws from all the traditions the ensemble has incorporated in the past: with an emphasis on the improvisational virtuosity of the musicians, we create a fusion of jazz with Indian, Latin, and other flavors. We hope you find the music as much fun to listen to as we have when we are creating it! [less-]

Celebrating their 25th anniversary, Canadian musician Tom Landa is looking back on the legacy of his much-loved folk rock band The Paperboys. For a quarter century, The Paperboys have been touring the world and lighting up stages with their freewheeling blend of influences from Celtic and bluegrass, to Mexican son jarocho, brass bands, and Canadian roots. They have been called everything from Cajun slamgrass to worldbeat, they’ve received a Juno award (Canadian Grammy), plus two Juno nominations, two West Coast Music Awards, released nine albums, and regularly play two-night bills in the Pacific Northwest. What’s remarkable about the band is their ability to seamlessly fuse all the different styles and make it sounds like they come from the same place. Their latest CD, "Score" is full of these signature sounds: Spanish language songs that reflect Landa’s Mexican heritage, explosive brass lines from their extended 8-piece ensemble, Celtic fiddle and pennywhistle blazing through an old reel, English language rock songs with strong pop influences, and a kind of melting pot sound that reflects not only the diversity of the band’s home city, Vancouver, B.C., but also a larger vision of what modern Canadian roots music should sound like. Catch them live in this show at the Meydenbauer Center Theatre in Bellevue. [less-]

Ah, Thanksgiving, that most American of holidays: when families gather to celebrate the warmth of home, the bounty of the harvest — and a legacy of genocide and violent colonial expansion. Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in Larissa FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, as a troupe of terminally “woke” teaching artists scrambles to create a pageant that somehow manages to celebrate both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month. The ghost stories behind each building and landmark will cause you to see Seattle's No. 1 tourist destination in an entirely new way. Led by members of Unexpected Productions Improv, "Market Ghost Stories" is the evolution of the original Market Ghost Tour. Who better to share these ghastly tales than an improv company that's been weaving stories for 35 years?! [less-]

All Hallows Eve approaches, and the Cabiri is dredging up ghastly tales from the depths in preparation for our 13th annual Ghost Game production at Arcadia in Ballard. "Devil in the Deep Blue Sea" is a collection of tales from myth and folklore, merging contemporary circus, giant puppets, theatre, and dance to create an immersive experience like no other. This year's production dredges up dark and enchanting tales from the realm of water. From sirens caterwauling in the sails to the murky depths where ravenous kelpie wait to tangle you in its mane, the ocean lures the damned with irresistible charms. Aerialists twirl and dance overhead and accompaniment by a trio of musicians transform Arcadia, a 3,700-square-foot cultural arts space, into an enchanted grotto. A chosen few guests will find themselves transformed into unsuspecting participants in the epic tales unfolding before them. Feeling shy? No worries — participatory elements are optional. Due to mature subject matter, "Devil in the Deep Blue Sea" is not recommended for guests under 16 years old. Portions of the show entail standing for short periods of time and walking slowly in low light conditions. We suggest flat shoes and leaving purses and bags at home as they can be a trip hazard.
